Toxicity of cadmium and copper and their effect on some biochemical parameters of marine fish mugil sheheli OceanDocs
Abou El-Naga, E.H.; El-Moselhy, K.M.; Hamed, M.A..
The present work aimed to estimate the toxicity of cadmium and copper to fingerlings of marine fish Mugil seheli, as well as the effect of different concentratios of Cd and Cu on some biochemical parameters (Aspartate and alanine transaminase enzymes, glucose, glycogen, lipid and protein) in the fish organs. 96-h LC50s of Cd and Cu were 5.36 and 1.64 ppm, respectively. Levels of aspartate and alanine transaminase were reduced within 2 days of exposure to different concentrations of Cd (2.0 and 0.5 ppm) and Cu (0.5 and 0.2 ppm) in both plasma and muscle tissue. Glucose was increased reaching the highest values after 4 days of the treatment with Cd and Cu, while muscle glycogen was increased at first days then dropped after 14 days below control level....

Factors involved with cadmium absorption by a wild-type strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae BJM
Adamis,Paula D.B.; Panek,Anita D.; Leite,Selma G.F.; Eleutherio,Elis C.A..
At the concentration used in this work (10 ppm), cadmium was efficiently removed from the environment by stationary yeast cells. While exponential phase cells showed low capacity of cadmium absorption, stationary cells removed 97% of the original metal in 24 hours. Total cadmium absorption shown by dry cells was lower than that of fresh ones, although both cells removed 50% of metal during the first hour of treatment. We also verified that only viable cells were capable of absorbing cadmium. Independently of the growth phase, cells showed high tolerance to 10 ppm CdSO4 and about 80% of cells remained viable after 24 hours exposure to cadmium. However, when stationary phase cells were previously dehydrated and then exposed to cadmium, they exhibited poor...

Ameur, S.; Ghedira, J.; Guerbej, H.; Jebali, J.; Bouraoui, J.; Boussetta, H..

Heterologous expression of a rice metallothionein isoform (OsMTI-1b) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae enhances cadmium, hydrogen peroxide and ethanol tolerance BJM
Ansarypour,Zahra; Shahpiri,Azar.
Abstract Metallothioneins are a superfamily of low-molecular-weight, cysteine (Cys)-rich proteins that are believed to play important roles in protection against metal toxicity and oxidative stress. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of heterologous expression of a rice metallothionein isoform (OsMTI-1b) on the tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to Cd2+, H2O2 and ethanol stress. The gene encoding OsMTI-1b was cloned into p426GPD as a yeast expression vector. The new construct was transformed to competent cells of S. cerevisiae. After verification of heterologous expression of OsMTI-1b, the new strain and control were grown under stress conditions. In comparison to control strain, the transformed S. cerevisiae cells expressing...

Comparative study of potential transfer of natural and anthropogenic cadmium to plankton communities in the North-West African upwelling ArchiMer
Auger, Pierre-amael; Machu, Eric; Gorgues, Thomas; Grima, Nicolas; Waeles, Mathieu.
A Lagrangian approach based on a physical-biogeochemical modeling was used to compare the potential transfer of cadmium (Cd) from natural and anthropogenic sources to plankton communities (Cd-uptake) in the NorthWest African upwelling. In this region, coastal upwelling was estimated to be the main natural source of Cd while the most significant anthropogenic source for marine ecosystem is provided by phosphate industry. In our model experiment, Cd-uptake (natural or anthropogenic) in the North-West African upwelling is the result of an interplay between the Cd dispersion (by advection processes) and the simulated biological productivity. In the Moroccan waters, advection processes limit the residence time of water masses resulting in a low natural...

Cadmium toxicity in plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Benavides,María P.; Gallego,Susana M.; Tomaro,María L..
Heavy metals are important environmental pollutants and their toxicity is a problem of increasing significance for ecological, evolutionary, nutritional, and environmental reasons. Plants posses homeostatic cellular mechanisms to regulate the concentration of metal ions inside the cell to minimize the potential damage that could result from the exposure to nonessential metal ions. This paper summarizes present knowledge in the field of higher plant responses to cadmium, an important environmental pollutant. Knowledge concerning metal toxicity, including mechanisms of cadmium homeostasis, uptake, transport and accumulation are evaluated. The role of the cell wall, the plasma membrane and the mycorrhizas, as the main barriers against cadmium entrance to the...

Impact de facteurs environnementaux sur l'aneuploïdie chez l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Bouilly, Karine.
The impact of environmental factors on aneuploidy level in the oyster Crassostrea gigas was studied with experiments in controlled conditions which exposed adult and juvenile oysters to different pollutants (atrazine, a herbicide, and cadmium, a heavy metal) frequently found in Marennes-Oléron Bay. A positive correlation between atrazine concentration and aneuploidy in C. gigas was observed. Moreover, the impact of atrazine on aneuploidy level persisted in time both within and between generations, demonstrating the influence of an environmental pollution on this phenomenon. On the other hand, the aneuploidy level of C. gigas was not influenced at the cadmium concentrations tested. Significant differences in aneuploidy levels were observed in oysters...

Effects of cadmium on aneuploidy and hemocyte parameters in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bouilly, Karine; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Bonnard, Marc; Thomas-guyon, Helene; Renault, Tristan; Miramand, Pierre; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, are commonly reared in estuaries where they are exposed to anthropogenic pollution. Much research has been made on the toxicity of cadmium to aquatic organisms because the compound recurrently contaminates their environment. Our study examined the influence of cadmium on aneuploidy level (lowered chromosome number in a percentage of somatic cells) and hemocyte parameters in C. gigas at different stages of life. Adults and juveniles were exposed to two different concentrations of cadmium. The first concentration applied was equivalent to a peak value found in Marennes-Oleron bay (Charente-Maritime, France; 50 ng L-1) and the second was 10 times higher (500 ng L-1). Exposure to 50 ng L-1 cadmium caused a significant...

Impact of pollutants on aneuploidy in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bouilly, Karine; Leitao, Alexandra; Mccombie, Helen; Miramand, Pierre; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Aneuploidy is the alteration of the normal diploid chromosome number. In the Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, hypodiploid cells have regularly been reported as have a negative correlation between this phenomenon and growth and evidence for a genetic basis. We previously demonstrated a positive relationship between a pollutant, atrazine, and aneuploidy in Crassastrea gigas adults and juveniles. To evaluate the persistence of this impact, the present study focused on a sample of the same juveniles previously exposed to different atrazine treatments (0.0 1 mg/l which represents a peak value found in a polluted environment and 0.1 mg/l) for three and a half months. Then, we evaluated them for aneuploidy after another two and a half months in non polluted...

La contamination de la Gironde par le cadmium : origine, extension, importance ArchiMer
Boutier, Bernard; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Jouanneau, Jean-marie; Latouche, Claude; Philipps, Isabelle.
In 1979, the French monitoring program RNO (Réseau National d'Observation de la qualité du milieu Marin) pointed out a dramatic cadmium contamination in the oysters from the Gironde estuary (up to 100 ug -1, dry weight). The wild oyster-beds upstream the estuary were shown to be the most contaminated. This result tends to point to the river as the source of the cadmium contamination. At the same rime, uncontaminated oysters from Arcachon were transplanted in the Gironde estuary (La Fosse, Dau). This ex periment confirmed the importance and proved the permanence of the contamination. Very high concentrations of dissolved cadmium (400 ng. 1-1) were measured in the estuarine mixing zone. This phenomenon can be explained by the desorption of cadmiumfrom...

Uptake of cadmium by Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata BABT
Casiraghi,Magela Paula; Luporini,Samuel; Silva,Eduardo Mendes da.
In this work the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata was used for the removal of the cadmium in liquids. The accumulations of metal ions by the alga occur in two stages: a very fast absorption (passive adsorption) proceeded by a slower absorption (activate absorption). A mathematical model based on the surface absorption and on the transport into the interior of the cellular membrane was developed. The simulation model kinetic parameters were experimentally obtained. Through the results observed, the mathematical model was shown to be suitable when compared to the experimental results, confirming the validation of the mathematical model.

Radiochemical study of Cd , Co and Eu coprecipitation with Iron Hydroxide in seawater OMA
Chakravorty, R.; Van Grieken, R..
The coprecipitation of Cd, Co and Eu from seawater onto ferric hydroxide was studied, using the radioactive tracers 109Cd, 60Co and 152-154Eu, as a function of the pH, the concentration of the collector iron, the concentration of the metal spike and the aging of the internally formed precipitate. For preconcentration purpose, a pH 9 and a 35 ppm iron concentration appeared to be suitable. At pH 8, the natural pH of seawater, the distribution coefficients for Cd, Co and Eu are 104.5, 105 and 107, respectively.

Metal bioaccumulation and metallothionein concentrations in larvae of Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Damiens, Gautier; Mouneyrac, Catherine; Quiniou, Francoise; His, Edouard; Gnassia Barelli, Mauricette; Romeo, Michèle.
Larval stages of bivalve molluscs are highly sensitive to pollutants. Oysters from a hatchery from Normandy (English Channel) were induced to spawn, and fertilized eggs were exposed to copper or cadmium for 24 h. Metal accumulation (from 0.125 to 5 mu g Cu L-1 and from 25 to 200 mu g Cd L-1) and MT concentrations were measured in larvae. Compared to controls, larvae accumulated copper and cadmium with an increase in MT concentrations particularly with cadmium (i.e. 130.96 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 12.69 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) at 1 mu g Cu L-1 versus 23.19 ng Cu (mg protein)(-1) and 8.92 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) in control larvae; 334.3 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and 11.70 mu g MT (mg protein)(-1) at 200 mu g Cd L-1 versus 0.87 ng Cd (mg protein)(-1) and...

Most of trace elements have a non conservative behavior in estuarine environments. It is the case of cadmium, cobalt and caesium for which the fate in estuarine and coastal zones is largely controlled by their distribution between water and suspended particles, which generally have high residence times or can be definitely deposited in these areas. Metallic contaminants and radionuclides can be present under various species : dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated) or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. Such distributions are the result of processes (physical, chemical, biological) which are controlled by many factors (ionic strengh, pH, Eh, major cations concentration, nature and...
